The Side Effects of Steroid Nasal Sprays

Steroid nasal sprays are highly recommended by doctors to treat allergies in the nasal area including congestion and runny nose. However, this type anti-allergy medication can also give many side effects. It has been reported that nasal steroids can have a small effect on a child's vertical growth although this is still a hotly contested topic. There is still however, a possibility that if steroid nasal sprays do affect a child's growth, it may be very transient, i.e. that the child would still attain his or her original expected adult height.

Another noted side effect for this drug is the increased risks for cataracts and glaucoma, especially for people with history of these diseases, or have genetic predisposition to them. To be sure, it is recommended that you undergo routine annual eye exams by a qualified optometrist or ophthalmologist.

A large number of reported side effects from steroid nasal sprays happen within the nose area. These side effects commonly include nose bleeds and nasal irritation. If these reactions happen to you, you must stop using the drug for a few days, and then restart the application. If the symptoms continue stop using it and go to your doctor for advice. If you will continue using it, you might be putting yourself at risk for septal perforation.
