The Side Effects of Prednisone

Prednisone is a cheap, yet effective anti-inflammatory drug used to treat a wide variety of diseases ranging from mild to serious cases. It can even be used to treat cancer if taken at higher doses. It is also used as a last resort to treat severe allergies and asthma. Nevertheless, like any other drugs, it has many side effects. Here are some of them:

  •  increased appetite
  • Nervousness or restlessness
  • Indigestion
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Lightening or darkening of skin color
  • Hiccups
  • Sensation of spinning
  • Increased sweating
  • Increased thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Decreased or blurred visio

Other serious side effects have to be told to your doctor such as acne, eye pain, irregular heartbeat, nausea, among others. Since prednisone is a corticosteroid, it can also cause side effects such as sleep interruptions and bloating. It can also cause long term side effects to patients who take it frequently for extended periods such as drug-induced adrenal insufficiency, bone loss or osteoporosis, etc. Corticosteroids also tend to lower your resistance to infections. This means that any infection you get may be harder to treat than normal. Go to your doctor right away if you suspect you have any of these side effects.
