The Side Effects of Decongestants

Decongestants, although highly effective in dealing with stuffy and runny nose, do not come without a price. There are side effects from these drugs ranging from mild to serious. They are not recommended to be taken before going to bed because they can cause nervousness and overstimulation of the brain. They are also reported to raise blood pressure. While this is acceptable for people with normal, healthy heart, those already suffering from high blood pressure and heart disease can increase the risk of attacks from their respective diseases.

One of the serious side effects of decongestants is making heart problems worse. If you have any high blood pressure or heart disease, always tell your doctor before he or she gives you a decongestant. Other side effects are:

  • Nervousness
  • Restlessness
  • Sleeplessness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Urinary problems
  • Blurred vision or visual difficulties
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Headache
  • Faster heartbeat
  • Rebound effect (coming from nasal or drops version)
The nasal or drops forms of decongestants can cause the blood vessels in the nose to swell if taken for more than 3 days, or if there is as over dosage of the drugs. This can cause the feeling of a stuffy nose much worse. This condition is called chemical rhinitis or rhinitis medicamentosa.
