The Side Effects of Antihistamines

The body is safe from diseases most of the time because our immune system protects us. Unfortunately, this protection can backfire if the same immune system becomes oversensitive to even harmless substances like mold spores, pollen, insect venom, and certain food proteins. These mentioned substances are normally called allergens. If allergens make contact with the immune system, antibodies are normally secreted to try to fight the invaders. This misidentification of our body's security system often gives us more severe effects than the allergen itself.

The best way to neutralize your body's misguided aggression is to take antihistamines. Unfortunately, antihistamines come with a price tag that goes way beyond its monetary price. A common side effect from this drug is extreme drowsiness. If the nature of your job is demanding or can cause great damage like operating heavy machineries, do not even think of taking antihistamines. Other side effects are dizziness, nervousness, restlessness, and upset stomach. Other rare effects are dry mouth, irritability, blurred vision, and difficulty urinating. Constant usage of one particular antihistamine drug can sometimes make the immune system build up tolerance to it. This can render the drug useless. It is advisable that you rotate the use of antihistamines every three months to prevent this from happening.
