Over-the-Counter Medications for Seasonal Allergies

Many available allergy medications do not require prescription by doctors. Over-the-counter antihistamines are readily available in drugstores. Antihistamines are effective in stopping the itch and sneezing caused by the release of histamine that your body unleashes as a reaction to allergens. The main function of antihistamine is to block the action of histamine. The most common examples of non-prescription antihistamine are clemastine (Tavist) and diphenhydramine (Benadryl).

Although antihistamines can effectively minimize the symptoms of seasonal allergies, they can make you snooze. Some people would use antihistamines as a sleeping aid. In addition to extreme drowsiness, over-the-counter antihistamines can also cause dry mouth. For some rare cases, there are reported confusion and blurred vision.

Another over-the-counter medication is a nasal decongestant such as pseudoephedrine which may help relieve a stuffy nose. This type of drugs helps constrict the blood vessels and reduces blood flow to the nasal passages, which in turn, reduces swelling.

The possible side effects from these drugs are restlessness, insomnia, and difficulty urinating.

Before you buy anti-allergy medication for the first time, make sure to see a doctor so will be guided on what specific type of drug you will take because every allergic reaction is unique to everyone.
