The Different Kinds of Medications for Seasonal AllergiesThere are tons of allergy medications available. They can be both over the counter drugs or prescribed by doctors. Finding for the right medication for you can be tricky because each allergic reaction is unique to the individual. Generally, the main type of medicine used to treat all types of allergies is antihistamine. The main function of antihistamine drug is to block a receptor for histamine--a chemical in the body that is produced after your immune system overreacts to harmless allergens such as pollens, pet dander, dust mites or spores of molds. Below are the drug choices for individuals with seasonal allergy. First-generation antihistamines. These are the original drugs developed to treat allergies. They normally cause drowsiness. Examples are Chlortrimeton and Benadryl. Second-generation antihistamines. These drugs don't cause a high level of drowsiness just the first-generation drugs, although some of them can still cause mild sedation for some people. These drugs are effective and produce little to no side effects. They can be taken in a regular basis and may come in long-lasting versions. Examples of these types are Zyrtec, Claritin, and Allegra. Leukotriene modifiers. This type can treat both asthma and allergies. A good example is Singulair. It can block leukotrienes, another chemical involved in allergic reaction. Homeopathic medicines. This is actually an alternative treatment for allergies. These are allergens that can be taken by tiny amounts to slowly de-sensitize your body over time. |
