The Nature of DecongestantsDecongestants are a group of drugs that help narrow the blood vessels in the lining of your nose. This result in the reduction of the amount of blood that flows through the area so that the swollen tissue inside your nose shrinks, allowing the air to pass through. Decongestants are one of the many over-the-counter drugs you can buy without any prescription from your doctor. There are only 2 over-the-counter decongestants that are available in pill form: phynelephtrine (in the form of Susafed PE) and pseudoepherine (in the form of Contac Non-Drowsy, Sudafed). These drugs can also come in drops or as nasal sprays. The common side effect for these drugs is addiction. You must not use decongestants for more than 3 days because your body will become dependent on them. This can cause your nose to feel even more stuffed up even if you already quit using them. Even though it does not normally require a prescription, you must still tell your doctor if you are planning to use it. Decongestants normally work great with antihistamines but not with other drugs. If you are taking medication therapy for another illness, be sure to mention it with your doctor as well. This is just to avoid complications. |
