The Nature of Mold AllergyIf your allergy goes beyond another season, it may indicate that you have no seasonal allergy. Another form of common allergies is one caused by molds or fungi. Molds can be found anywhere, and disturbing a mold colony can disperse the spores into the air. Mildew and mold are types of fungi. They are relatively different from plants in the way they grow and reproduce. Their "seeds", which are called spores, are carried by the wind outdoors and the air inside a home. Spores are normally released when there is dry, windy weather. Some are released with the fog or dew when humidity is high. The human immune system normally ignores harmless allergens such as mold and mildew in the blood, but for some people inhaling the allergens can cause allergic reactions. Most people who have allergic reaction all year round may be allergic to fungi. Fungi are most common during July to late summer but also be present all throughout the year. Unlike pollens, another source of allergies, molds do not die in winter. They only become dormant during the cold weather. At home, molds and fungi can grow in damp areas like in the bathroom, basement, or kitchen. If you think you are allergic to molds and fungi, be sure to clean the places mentioned at home to minimize the risk. |
