Heart Disease and Antihistamines

People suffering from heart disease should be extra careful in taking medications, especially a combination of drugs. The same is true for people taking in antihistamines for allergies. A combination of antihistamines and drugs for heart disease may create more problems than solutions. Below is the complete list of people who are not supposed to take antihistamines if they have the following health issues:

  • Trouble urinating (due to enlarged prostate gland)
  • Breathing problems like asthma, chronic bronchitis, or emphysema
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease

People with kidney or liver problems must also consult their doctor before they would take antihistamines.

While there are already new versions of antihistamines that can work with heart disease medications, it is still highly advisable that you contact your doctor first before you take your heart disease drugs and antihistamines. Try to avoid over the counter antihistamines. You also need to check the label of the drugs for colds. They sometimes contain some antihistamines. The rule of thumb is, never take a combined medication if you are not advised to do so. Doing the opposite might give you more problems than solutions. Talk to your doctor every time you will take 2 drugs at the same time.
