Can Corticosteroids come with adverse effects?


Corticosteroids are prescription drugs and must be administered after doctor’s consultation. Also, there are a few side effects associated with it. And that’s why it is important that this drug musty be administered for a shorter duration.

The most important thing that must be noted is that corticosteroid drugs tend to lower the immunity in certain cases. And prolonged use will impair the body’s own capacity to produce natural corticosteroid hormone.

Apart from this, the most common side effects of corticosteroids are changes in appetite, restlessness, anxiety, sleeping problems, dry throat, and indigestion. However, these side effects are not much serious. But when some really serious side effects are seen, then it is vital to consult the doctor immediately. These include irregular heartbeat, swelling of face and eyelids, rashes and acne on skin, vision problems, loss of taste, stuffy and runny nose, black stools, weight gain, menstrual problems, hallucinations and many more.

Sometimes, corticosteroids may not cause side effects. But drug interaction of corticosteroid medications along with other drugs like heart medicines, diabetes medications, blood thinners, vaccinations, estrogen drugs, antacids. And thus, you must let your doctor know about all the medications that you are taking so as to avoid corticosteroid reaction with other drugs.
