Is There a Connection Between Allergies and Antibiotics?

Antibiotics and allergies do not have a necessary connection. Antibiotics are medicinal products that have an antibacterial effect by either keeping the bacteria from reproducing, allowing the body to heal by producing its own defenses to overcome the infection, or right away killing the bacteria in the system. Allergies, on the other hand, are not caused by infectious bacteria but by certain allergen that your immune system mistook for an invading agent. Allergic reactions occur after the body produces more antibodies and histamine to try to fight the allergen. Thus, there is no way antibiotics can help in the treatment of allergies whatsoever.

Allergies are treated with antihistamines, a group of drugs that prevents further allergic reactions by blocking the receptors of cells involved in the process of histamine production. Unless your allergy coincidentally happens together with a bacterial infection, antibiotics can help you. But then again, antibiotics will only address the infection but not the allergy itself. It is simply a myth that antibiotics can help treat allergies. If you suspect you have allergic symptoms, consult a doctor so that the allergy will be confirmed and treated properly. Never treat your allergies with antibiotics. Doing so will definitely save you from more harm.
