The Symptoms of Aspirin Allergy

Sensitivity to aspirin is common. The fact is that, aspirin can cause a severe asthma attack for people already suffering from sinus problems and asthma. Common reactions to aspirin are most often related to the drug, although the symptoms are normally like those of normal allergic reactions. The signs and symptoms of aspirin allergy or sensitivity can occur over a few minutes to several hours after taking the medication.

These symptoms can range from mild to life-threatening and may include:

  • Itchy skin
  • Hives (a red coloration of the skin that looks like bumps over a wide area of the body)
  • Coughing, wheezing, or shortness of breath
  • Swelling of the face, lips, and tongue

If you have had any of these reactions, avoid all forms of aspirin to be on the safe side. It is also best to avoid other forms of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil, etc.) and naproxen (Aleve and others). Be reminded that aspirin are present in many over-the-counter drugs as well so you may want to double check the labels of your medications carefully. Do not wait for any adverse reaction that may happen if you suspect aspirin sensitivity. Consult your doctor right away for guidance.
