Facts about Aspirin Allergy


Aspirin is a very versatile drug. It can be used as an analgesic to relieve minor pains and aches, as an antipyretic to soothe the effects of fever, and an anti-inflammatory drug. Many people find this drug an effective medicine to a variety of their illnesses. There are, however, a few people who cannot tolerate aspirin--they are allergic to it. Just like any other allergy, the reactions vary from one person to another. The severity of the side effects is also determined by the state of your immune system. Reported reactions from this drug vary from mild to life-threatening.

The common symptoms include:

  • Hives and general swelling on the body;
  • Rhinitis;
  • Asthma and ;
  • Anaphylaxis.

There are also more serious allergic reactions to this drug such as stomach upset, bleeding, or bruising. 

Allergy to aspirin is believed to be present in 1% of the general population. People who have past medical history of asthma are more likely to suffer from this type of allergy. If you suspect that you are allergic to aspirin, seek the help of your allergist right away while avoiding the drug in the meantime. Tests will be done to confirm the allergy. Avoidance o this drug is the key.
