What is allergic conjunctivitis?

Allergic conjunctivitis is characterized by the inflammation on the membrane or tissue lining covering the eye lids, also known as conjunctiva. This is a common reaction which occurs due to a contact of eyes with allergens like pollens, dander, viruses, and bacteria. This condition is generally observed in form of redness in the eyes. It may trigger due to the eyes’ contact with the irritants present in utilities like soaps, shampoos, chlorine rich pool water. Sometimes, the symptoms of this allergy may also occur on the contraction of any sexually transmitted disease. This condition is often referred as pink eye and can easily spread from one person to another person, however, it does not impose any threat to the health condition.

Besides redness in the eyes, this allergy form can multiply the production of tears. Sometimes, it may lead to excessive itching sensation in the eyes which can be quite discomforting for the person. He/ she may also experience blurred vision, however, this symptom may get relieved without the need for any medicine. In severe cases, swelling on the eye lids may also be commonly observed. Nevertheless the severity of the infection, it is important to consult an experienced optometrist or an ophthalmologist for its right treatment.
