When going in for a skin allergy test, one should plan to spend roughly an hour in the doctor’s offices for the duration of the appointment. For the skin prick test and the intradermal skin test, the placement of the allergens takes roughly between 5 and 10 minutes. You will then have to wait approximately 15 minutes to judge whether the skin has had a reaction. The Patch test takes longer, because of how long you have to wear it to assess whether or not your body has a delayed reaction to the allergen. During this test period, swimming and bathing is best to be avoided. After the allotted period of time, you must return to the doctor’s offices to get the area/s checked out.
In order to prepare for your skin test, ensure that you alert your doctor with regard to all the medicines you are currently taking, including any over-the-counter meds. Because all allergy medication including all antihistamines put a stop to allergic reactions, you should avoid taking these for a good few days before taking the test. Your doctor should also provide you with a list of medications to steer clear of before taking the test, as there are some other drugs that will influence the results.

As previously mentioned, there are three types of skin tests that one can perform in order to identify allergens. The first is a skin prick test. This is done by pricking the skin with a needle, just deep enough so that the droplets of suspected allergen solutions can get into the skin when placed on the pin prick holes. If the person’s skin becomes red, raised and itchy at the site of the allergen placement, then it is taken to mean that the person tested is positively allergic to that specific allergen. The next kind of test is an intradermal test, which is performed when the skin prick test comes up negative but a substance is still suspected of being an allergen. When performing this test, a tiny amount of that specific allergen solution gets injected into the skin. Because of this, this test is more sensitive than the first, and can often lead to positive results in people that don’t have allergies due to its invasive nature. This is known as a false positive. Lastly, there is the skin patch test. In this test the allergen solution is applied to a pad that is then bound to the person’s skin for between 24 and 72 hours. This test is specifically used to detect an annoying skin allergy known as contact dermatitis.

It is always important to know if you have any allergies, and what those allergies are so that you can prevent or limit your exposure to the allergens in order to avoid having a reaction to them or to limit the extent of that reaction to the best of your ability. There are two types of tests that you can take to determine which allergies you have, if any. The first type of test is a skin test. This is where a small amount of an allergen is applied to or placed just beneath your skin. The amount of allergens used is not significant enough to cause an extreme reaction but if you are allergic to any of the allergens tested, you will have a very minor reaction that will indicate your allergy level.
There are three types of skin tests for allergies and also a blood test which can be used for people who are for any reason unable to have skin tests. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay or ELISA is the most commonly performed blood test type used. This test works by measuring the blood level of a specific type of antibody that the body produces in reaction to certain allergens. These antibody levels are often much higher in persons who suffer from asthma or allergies.
